Hocklynn fabricates custom transformer enclosures, switchgear enclosures and generator enclosures for power infrastructure, industrial installations and renewable energy applications. From compact panel-mounted housings to large floor-standing enclosures, we manufacture metal enclosures for power equipment at our Bristol facility.

Transformer, switchgear and generator equipment requires robust protective housing that provides physical security, weather protection, ventilation and safe access for maintenance personnel. Standard catalogue enclosures work for common equipment sizes and standard site conditions, but many power infrastructure installations require custom enclosures designed around the specific equipment configuration, site constraints and environmental conditions of the project.

We work with electrical contractors, switchgear manufacturers, panel builders, renewable energy installers and facilities management teams who need metal enclosures fabricated to precise specifications for power equipment applications.

Transformer Enclosures

Transformer enclosures protect cast resin, dry type and oil-filled transformers from physical damage, weather exposure and unauthorised access. The critical design consideration for any transformer enclosure is ventilation. Transformers generate significant heat during operation, and the enclosure must allow sufficient airflow to dissipate this thermal load without compromising weather protection or physical security.

We fabricate transformer enclosures with engineered ventilation openings sized and positioned to maintain adequate airflow across the transformer at full rated load. Ventilation can be provided through louvred panels, mesh grilles, or non-vision transfer grilles depending on the site requirements for weather protection, debris exclusion, pest resistance and visual security. For installations where natural ventilation is insufficient, we can incorporate provisions for forced ventilation fans with filtered intake and exhaust openings.

Transformer enclosures are typically fabricated from mild steel with powder coating or hot-dip galvanising for outdoor installations. Stainless steel construction is specified for coastal sites, chemically aggressive environments, or locations where long service life with minimal maintenance is a priority. We fabricate transformer enclosures with removable panels, access doors, cable entry points and lifting provisions designed around the specific transformer and its associated cable terminations and protection equipment.

Switchgear Enclosures

Switchgear enclosures house the circuit breakers, isolators, busbars, protection relays, metering equipment and control systems that manage electrical power distribution in industrial, commercial and utility applications. These enclosures must provide a controlled environment for sensitive electrical equipment while allowing safe access for operation, testing and maintenance.

The internal layout of a switchgear enclosure is driven by the electrical equipment it houses. Cable entry positions, busbar routing, clearance requirements between live parts, operator access zones, and maintenance access panels must all be designed around the specific switchgear configuration. This is inherently a custom fabrication requirement, as no two switchgear installations have identical layouts.

We fabricate switchgear enclosures with features including segregated compartments for different equipment sections, removable gland plates for cable entry, earth bar mounting provisions, and viewing windows for equipment status indication. Floor-standing, wall-mounted and free-standing configurations are all within our manufacturing capability.

For outdoor switchgear installations, our enclosures incorporate weatherproofing to IP65 or IP66 standards, with sealed cable entries, gasketted doors and rain hoods over ventilation openings. Anti-condensation heaters, thermostatically controlled ventilation fans, and internal lighting are commonly specified features that we integrate during fabrication.

Generator Enclosures

Generator enclosures protect standby and prime power generation equipment from weather, physical damage, theft and tampering. They also serve an important acoustic function, containing the noise produced by the generator engine and exhaust system to meet site-specific noise level requirements.

The design of a generator enclosure must balance several competing requirements. Adequate ventilation is essential to supply combustion air to the engine and remove the heat generated during operation, but ventilation openings also allow noise to escape. Exhaust routing must be accommodated without creating hot spots or back-pressure issues. Fuel supply connections, control panel access, and maintenance access for oil changes, filter replacement and engine servicing must all be designed into the enclosure from the outset.

We fabricate generator enclosures in mild steel and galvanised steel, with powder coating for corrosion protection and visual appearance. Enclosures can incorporate louvred ventilation panels, attenuated intake and exhaust openings, hinged and removable access panels, fuel connection provisions, exhaust penetrations with heat shielding, lifting points for crane handling, and forklift pockets for positioning on site.

For applications with specific noise control requirements, we fabricate the structural metal enclosure shell and work with specialist acoustic lining suppliers to incorporate sound-absorbing materials that bring the overall installation within the required noise limits.

Renewable Energy and Battery Storage Enclosures

The growth of renewable energy installations and battery energy storage systems is driving demand for custom metal enclosures that house inverters, charge controllers, battery management systems, grid connection equipment and monitoring hardware. These enclosures must manage the thermal load generated by power conversion equipment, provide appropriate levels of fire protection, and withstand the outdoor environments where most renewable energy installations are located.

Solar farm inverter enclosures, wind turbine control cabinets, battery storage housings and grid connection enclosures all require a combination of weather protection, thermal management, physical security and maintenance access that standard catalogue products rarely provide in the right configuration. Custom fabrication allows every aspect of the enclosure to be designed around the equipment it houses and the site conditions it must withstand.

Materials and Construction

We fabricate power equipment enclosures in mild steel, galvanised steel, stainless steel and aluminium, with material selection guided by the installation environment and service life requirements.

Mild steel with powder coating is the standard specification for indoor and sheltered outdoor installations. Galvanised steel with powder coating provides the duplex corrosion protection system favoured for outdoor power infrastructure with extended service life expectations. Stainless steel serves corrosive environments and prestige installations. Aluminium is specified for weight-sensitive applications and locations where its natural corrosion resistance provides a maintenance advantage.

All enclosures are fabricated using CNC laser cutting, CNC press brake folding, and TIG or MIG welding. For stainless steel enclosures, we use electrolytic weld cleaning to restore full corrosion resistance at welded joints. Finishing options include polyester powder coating in any RAL colour, hot-dip galvanising, and specialist coatings for extreme environments.

Design and Manufacturing

Every power equipment enclosure project begins with a review of your requirements. You can supply us with CAD files, electrical layout drawings, equipment datasheets, or a specification describing the equipment to be housed and the site conditions. Our engineering team will work with you to develop an enclosure design that meets your functional, environmental and budgetary requirements.

We produce power equipment enclosures in quantities from single prototypes to repeat production runs. For panel builders, switchgear manufacturers and equipment OEMs with ongoing enclosure requirements, every job is set up for efficient reordering with all production data stored from the first run. This prototype-to-production approach keeps your costs down and your supply chain reliable.

If you need custom enclosures for transformers, switchgear, generators, battery storage or other power infrastructure equipment, contact our team to discuss your requirements.
