Hocklynn designs and manufactures custom EV charging enclosures for charge point operators, electrical contractors, infrastructure developers and equipment manufacturers across the UK. From single prototype housings to scheduled production runs, we fabricate bespoke metal enclosures for electric vehicle charging infrastructure at our Bristol facility.

The rapid expansion of the UK’s EV charging network is driving demand for enclosures that go beyond what off-the-shelf plastic and GRP housings can deliver. Standard catalogue enclosures suit basic domestic installations, but commercial, public-facing and high-power charging infrastructure frequently requires custom metal enclosures that are engineered for the specific equipment, site conditions and operational demands of the installation.

Our EV charging enclosures are fabricated from mild steel, stainless steel, galvanised steel and aluminium in configurations designed to house power distribution equipment, cable management systems, metering, payment hardware, communications equipment and the electrical components that support EV charge points. Every enclosure is built to order with no catalogue constraints on size, material, IP rating or internal configuration.

Why Custom EV Charging Enclosures

Off-the-shelf EV charger covers and standard GRP enclosures handle basic installations where the equipment is compact, the site is sheltered, and the aesthetic requirements are minimal. But many EV charging installations present challenges that standard products cannot address.

High-power rapid charging equipment generates significant heat and requires enclosures with engineered ventilation, thermal management and cable routing that off-the-shelf housings simply do not provide. Multi-charger installations at commercial sites, fleet depots and public charging hubs require larger enclosures that house centralised power distribution, protection and monitoring equipment for multiple charge points. These installations demand bespoke internal layouts designed around the specific electrical equipment being housed.

Public-facing installations at retail sites, car parks, forecourts and roadside locations require enclosures that combine weather protection and physical security with a visual appearance appropriate to the setting. Custom metal enclosures can be powder coated to match corporate colours, branded with operator logos, and designed with anti-vandal features that GRP alternatives cannot match.

Fleet charging installations at depots, logistics centres and commercial vehicle bases require robust enclosures that withstand the demands of busy operational environments. Impact resistance, forklift protection, and the ability to house heavy-duty electrical equipment in a compact footprint are common requirements that custom fabrication addresses naturally.

Materials and Construction

The material choice for an EV charging enclosure depends on the installation environment, the required service life, and the protection rating needed.

Galvanised steel with powder coating is the standard specification for the majority of outdoor EV charging enclosures. The combination of galvanised substrate and polyester powder coat provides durable corrosion protection at a competitive cost, and the powder coat finish allows any RAL colour to match site requirements or corporate branding. This is the same duplex coating approach used by utility companies for feeder pillars and roadside electrical cabinets.

Stainless steel EV charging enclosures are specified for coastal locations, areas with high salt exposure, car wash facilities, and prestige installations where a natural metal finish is preferred. Grades 304 and 316 stainless steel both offer excellent long-term corrosion resistance in outdoor environments, with 316 providing additional protection in chloride-rich atmospheres.

Aluminium EV charging enclosures offer a lightweight alternative with naturally good corrosion resistance. Aluminium is particularly suited to pole-mounted installations, wall-mounted housings, and locations where weight restrictions apply.

EV Charging Enclosure Applications

We fabricate custom enclosures for every stage of the EV charging infrastructure chain. Power distribution enclosures and feeder pillars house the switchgear, protection devices, metering equipment and cable terminations that supply electrical power to charge points. These enclosures sit between the mains supply and the charging equipment, and must be designed to accommodate the specific electrical configuration of each installation.

Charger housing enclosures protect the charging electronics, payment systems, display screens and communication equipment that form the user-facing part of a charge point installation. Custom metal housings provide better impact resistance, thermal management and physical security than standard plastic alternatives, which matters for high-value equipment in public locations.

Cable management and junction enclosures serve as intermediate connection points within larger charging installations, routing power and data cables between distribution boards and individual charge points. These enclosures must provide weatherproof cable entry, organised termination space, and easy maintenance access.

Battery storage and grid connection enclosures house the energy storage systems and grid interface equipment that are increasingly common in commercial charging installations. These larger enclosures require careful attention to ventilation, thermal management and fire safety, as well as structural strength to support heavy battery modules.

Design and Customisation

Every EV charging enclosure we produce is designed around the specific equipment it will house and the site where it will be installed. Our engineering team works with your design files, electrical schematics or equipment specifications to produce an enclosure that fits your requirements exactly.

We accommodate custom cutout patterns for cable glands, ventilation louvres, display windows, switches, indicator lights and access doors. Internal mounting arrangements including DIN rails, cable trays, back panels, sub-plates and equipment mounting brackets are fabricated and fitted as part of the build. Door configurations, locking mechanisms and hinge types are selected to suit the access requirements and security level needed for each installation.

For charge point operators and equipment manufacturers developing new products or expanding into new installation types, we support the prototype-to-production journey. We can produce initial prototypes for design validation and field testing, then transition to efficient repeat production as your requirements scale. All CNC programmes and tooling setups are retained on file so that repeat orders can be manufactured without re-engineering.
